Bioshock Infinite Announced!

When Ken Levine, the lead director and creative mind behind Bioshock, left what became 2K Marin to what is now Irrational Games, many gamers wondered what could possibly be in the works from him over the past few years.

After almost three years of silence, Irrational Games has announced its newest product: Bioshock Infinite.

The game takes place in 1912, quite a bit earlier than the settings of Bioshock and its sequel. Furthermore, the game does not take place underwater, but rather, brings people to the skies in floating city called Columbia. Players take the role of Booker DeWitt, a former detective from Pinkerton who is sent to a find and rescue Elizabeth, a young woman trapped in the steampunk, flying metropolis. The press release further comments,
He develops a relationship with Elizabeth, augmenting his abilities with hers so the pair may escape from a city that is literally falling from the sky. DeWitt must learn to fight foes in high-speed Sky-Line battles, engage in combat both indoors and amongst the clouds, and harness the power of dozens of new weapons and abilities.
There are plenty of similarities between Infinite and the older titles. For one, Booker can obtain powers from the land and use them to fight off foes, ranging from deranged Colombians to Big Daddy-like beings called "Alphas." However, Levine has made it known that this is not just Bioshock in the sky; the game appears to have a much more open nature, along with increased potential cooperative action.

The game is still a ways off, despite the large announcement; 2K games and Irrational have the title listed as a 2012 release for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Whether the systems are still being heavily pushed then remains to be seen, but who knows what the industry is going to look like next year, let alone 2012.

Irrational Games contains the original team behind Bioshock, the first-person-shooter adventure-horror taking place in the underwater dystopia Rapture. 2K Marin, the team behind its sequel which released earlier this year, is now currently working on XCOM, a first-person-shooter involving a unique, alien menace attacking humanity.
